There are several types of software used by law enforcement today. One of the most important is the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). CODIS is a software program which maintains local, state, and national databases of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons. Each State has different “offenses” for which persons convicted of them must submit a biological sample to be included in the DNA database.
